In considering a new exhaust system for the RR, the choice was simple. My choice was based on a criteria of the system being:

Micron is well reputed for being rated high in ALL of the above.

As I didn't see Micron listed yet in the sales guides at the shop, I gave them a call just in time to find out about their release of the new line of pipes for the RR.

Opting for the "Stylish yet Functional", I ordered the Oval Alloy Race slip-on with the Crimson red finish.

About 4 days later it arrived.

What's in the box?

Exhaust can, brushed finish mid-pipe, clamps, springs, hangar, spring tool, stickers & ample installation instructions

The first thing I noticed in difference (aside from the gorgeous color) is the weight. The stock system weighs in at 13lbs, and my scale is registering around 4lbs for the micron! Quite a difference...

The view from the back of the stock and Micron pipes shows the Micron slightly smaller in diameter.

I also talked to Doug at Micron about the small insert in the rear of the pipe. He indicated that to meet noise requirements of certain race organizations, they included this. Removal is but a drilled rivet and 3 filed welds away!

Installation is a walk in the park. Mind you though, I was doing this on a stripped down bike. However, I don't believe that it would be any more difficult on a full stock streetbike. The supplied directions are spot-on, indicating every nut and bold that needs to be turned, and the sequence to make it all happen.

Basically, out with the old and in with the new!

Here, I have just slipped the new mid-pipe on. It required some working in a circular motion to spread apart and get all the way down to the header pipe (as you can see in pic 2).

Swing the mid-pipe under the subframe and slip on the can! It really is that simple. Personally, I didn't want to try and mess with the original heat shrouds for the leg, so I used some Cool-It wrap from Thermotec. Here's the product review I did on Cool-It way back when (since I've been using the stuff for years). The wrap simply keeps the heat in the pipe and off of me.

So, how does it sound?

One word... INCREDIBLE. If you live in an area with sensitive neighbors, you will need to tip-toe your bike out of there, or they'll be all over you. It's deep, and it's loud. It's very reminiscent of a 1000. Noise is not a matter to me, other than requiring to be able to hear the bike while I'm racing. This pipe indeed will let you hear it (and everybody else for that matter).

Parting shot & dyno shots.

The first pic is that of the bike in race-trim with the pipe peeking out from underneath.

The final results show minimal HP gains overall, but the midrange difference is significant. This is where the power counts anyhow, so I'm very pleased. Looking at the EGA results on the bottom of the dyno pic, the Power Commander (which will be here 6/25/03) will make a large difference.

In the end, the pipe is everything that the Micron reputation stands for. Fit & Finish are absolutely perfect, complete instructions, easy to install & maintain, just a flat-out no B.S. good pipe!

Where can you get yours?

Just about anywhere. Micron sells them direct, many dealers sell them as well. However, our personal recommendation would be to get them through our main sponsor and business partner, Lake Country PowerSports. You can see the pipes and fill out the form here or call the shop at 262-547-3088.
