Title: Swapping parts 03/04 - 05
Post by: Jeff on February 06, 2005, 08:56:02 PM
Here's the list so far of what I know will/will not swap.

WILL SWAP:
Wheels (front & rear)
Rotors (front & rear)
Sprocket Carrier & Cush drive
Gearing
Gas tank
Fuel pump
Clutch cover
Alternator cover
Rearsets (both sides)
Rear brake lever
Shift lever
Shock
Fairing stay
Tank cowl
Front master cylinder & lever
Clutch lever
Throttle assy

WILL NOT SWAP
Forks
Front brake calipers
Triples (top & bottom)
Front fender
Ignition* (could be made to work, but the 03/04 has one extra line for security. the 05 doesn't have this)
Axles
Battery tray / rear heat shield

AFTER MARKET STUFF
* Power commander from an 03/04 will work *** I talked to Dynojet and they said that if you are using an 03/04 on an 05, you *must* have it custom mapped or it won't map right.  I don't know why, but this is what they have told me.  The firmware is different as well.
* Scotts damper - Scotts is in the process of making a new mounting kit as the clearances are different.  Per Scott "the 03/04 might fit, but with clearance differences, I wouldn't recommend anyone try it".
* Exhaust systems will fit, but the mounting points are different for the headers and at the tail, so you will have to fool around with it and possibly fabricate a few brackets.

More to come...

Jeff will the headstocks match up? Like put an 05 frontend on an 03-04?

Good question.  I haven't measured it, but I'm very confident that you could put an 05 front end on an 03/04 bike (or vice versa).  But it would take forks, triples, clipons, fender, axle & spacers.

check out the ron ayers fiche, alot of the part#'s are the same, according to the fiche, the 05 upper should bolt on to the fairing stay with the front half of the ram air ducts and the ram air duct holders, the tail should bolt on.  not sure though, i'm just going off the part #'s

If the part #'s are the same on the products you list, then Ron Ayers isn't listing accurate part nums.  The parts are absolutely different.  Will they mount up?  I don't know.  The upper might, but I doubt that the tail will.  Honda advertised that the tail was narrower than the 03/04.  But again, I don't know.  Plus, if you went with the 05 tail on the 03/4 bike, you'd have a gaping hole where the key slot is on the 05 tail...

So the wheels swap including spacers, just the axles are different ?

Thats excellent news...

Yes & No.  I used the 05 spacers as I didn't want to measure out the 03/04 stuff, but they look pretty close.  The key here is that the wheels, rotors, cush drive & sprocket carrier will swap directly.  Axles & spacers are chump-change...

any chance the seat will swap out .. doesnt look like it
Title: Re: Swapping parts 03/04 - 05

Front seats line up bolt holes, so I believe they will swap.

Back seat looks identical.

Subframe measures out that it will bolt up, but the layout is different, so in a  pinch, you could use an 03/04 on an 05 or vice versa, but you'll have problems with the battery tray and what not.

That's a tough one..  Air filter should work, but I don't know about the stacks.  I think they may be different in the 05.

If someone is going to try to steal them by jumping the ignition, yes.

However, thieves simply don't do this.  THey pick the bike up and throw it in a van/truck/trailer...

Ok, does this equal any type of real benefit for the 03,04 or any type of weight reduction?

HA HA. Yep you're a dead man :D
Some fools in Downtown LA tried to Hi Jack my ride on a Sunday afternoon. They clipped my ignition wires on the left side of the steering head. But they couldn't get it to start and left it. Thankfully, I'd just renewed my HRC membership and got my bike the hell outta there. :-X

I don't really understand your question.
:( I am ignorant.  I was just wondering if the parts that are able to be swapped out from 05 to 03 any more beneficial for the 03 than what was already on it?  And are any of the parts that are "swappable" = any type of weight reductioin to the 03?  Maybe it's just a stupid question. ???
Title: Re: Swapping parts 03/04 - 05
Post by: Jeff on February 27, 2005, 08:04:36 PM
no, not a stupid question, I just didn't understand it the way you asked it the first time.

As for the upgrades, the real value would be in the forks & brakes, but that's a BIG cost setup for the average guy...

It really depends on what you need...  Some exhausts are available, some are not, brake lines are the same as the 1000RR, etc..

add the hugger to the list of dont fit's . the 03,04 is a little over 1/4" wider and has a different pitch away from the recess around the shock. the 2 side bolt holes line up but the one in the front does not. could be made to fit in a pinch though

Well after reading thru this, I've got too many spares for the CBR that will swap for me to buy a 636, so I'll have an 05 by the weekend... between spare wheels, slipper clutch, elec shifter, rearsets and brembo mastercyl, its just too much to have to replace on a different model.

also, will the rear pegs fit?
will the little plastic cover by the seat swap. i like the triangular thingy on the 05.

also to add, ive seen pics of a full plastic 05 swap on a 03.
looks good. but the tail wont swap.

So my quesiton now is this. I have a crashed 2005. Looking at a CLEAN 2004 frame to rebuild. From what I am reading, it seems as thought it wont be a good idea to buy the 2004 frame. Does this sound right? Any info would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks~!

You can use an 04 frame to rebuild only parts you will need is an 05 subframe if you are using a 05 tail fairing and you also can change the front end to use the 05 forks and MOST of the parts will work.

I haven't tried the motor, but I do not believe there were any mounting point changes between the 04/05, so it will probably work.

Race bodywork will fit right on.  The only prob I had was that the front fender hits the upper and stops the suspension travel.  Not by much, but still...I have had armour bodies and GP composites, 04 and 05 stuff and it still hits.  Right now we are having GP composites make some Lithium Motorsports 600rr specific body work.  But anyway, 04 to 05 race body work will swap.  Just cut out a hole in your upper for the fender or take the fender off.

Jeff - With respect to Exhaust swapping... you mentioned that the mounting points are different.

I know there is a mounting tab welded to the mid pipe, which will have to be replaced.  No problem.  However, will a muffler with a "universal" strap mount (able to slide freely along the axis of the can) work on the can?  Or has the mounting point moved latterally with respect to the centerline of the bike?

What about headers, I can't discern a difference from internet photos...

Thank you.
Title: Re: Swapping parts 03/04 - 05
Post by: Jeff on February 13, 2006, 10:18:15 AM
The subframe mounting points are different in the 03/04 to the 05/06.  On the 03/04, the clamp pinched together at the top and bolted to the subframe above the can.

On the 05/06, the exhaust bolts to both sides of the subframe.

The other point where you will have a problem will be the mounting point underneath the bike.  They are different, 03/04 to 05/06.

All in all, you can make it work, but you have to be open to fabricating brackets, etc.

03-04 race body will work on the 05-06 models.  the tail section that meets with the tank wont bolt in but your seat will prevent anything from moving.  check    review section 03-04 sharkskins on 06.  the only thing you will need are the ram air tubes.
