Title: headlights
Post by: banzai on August 27, 2003, 04:50:28 AM
Is there a quick fix get both lights on (other than the obvious of using hi-beam), also any idea of cost?

Why does eveyone want to do this? It's how the bike is designed. The easy thing to do is live with it. It looks cool.

yea seriously, why would you want to spend your time or money on getting both headlights to run at the same time.  if it was gonna bother you guys that bad, shoulda bought a different bike.  spend you money on something useful, like better gear or something.

Good luck guys. The reflector I would imagine is designed to be used for highbeams only. You'll have to replace the bulb with a high/low beam one since it will only have high beam. You'll have to modifiy the socket to allow for the extra terminal created by the low beam element. Then you'll get to contend with the no start thing.

banzai, I strongly suggest that you do not try to change the headlights into hi/lo beam combo. At least until Honda comes up with a fix for the no-start thing. I used to ride with hi-beam, or both lights, on all the time. Now to avoid having to push my bike every once in a while, my hi-beams are rarely on. If you change it so both lights are on all the time, you'll lose that option.

I dont get this either.

A high/low beam design is a compromise, how?

When you have a lens that is specifically designed for just one filament, the optics engineer knows exactly where to focus and point the light.

When you throw two filaments into the equasion, then its more difficult to design a housing that will be effective (best example to date: Ford Escort ZX2, WORST headlights EVER).

Then.. putting a 2 filament bulb into a lens system that is designed ofr one bulb???? I dont even want to GO there. Your lights will be so far out of whack, that you'll hit yourself for even thinking about trying it.

Moral: Spend your money elsewhere.

Just tape a damn mag-light to the front fairing.

I just ride with High Beams on, which is what you should do anyways
when you ride to increase your visibilty to others on the road.

Visibility? Now we're concerned about visibility? One thread is about how to find the smallest turn signals possible. "Can you get them that aren't visible to the naked eye?" Another thread is about how to remove all the reflectors. Then the next thread is about running with highbeams on to increase visibility? So the logic here is we don't want to be visible if it means our bikes look uncool, but we're ok with visibility as long as the only side effect is possibily blinding other drivers? No wonder other riders aren't waving to you guys.

what I don't understand is people trying to get both lights on at the same time ... uhm, people, you already have it installed from the factory.  it's called the high-beam switch.

sorry if this comes off badly, but you seriously have to recognize that both the headlights on our RR's are EXACTLY THE SAME.  the difference lies in the reflector mechanism inside your headlight.

to achieve the low-beam effect on both sides, you need to CHANGE THE REFLECTOR which requires you to remove and replace the headlight, not the bulb, the entire light fixture ... so that both sides have the same reflection angle for the light.  THIS WILL ONLY GIVE YOU LOW-BEAMS.

to get high-beams, you need a completely different set-up ... you need two-stage bulbs, different wiring harness to handle the different current, a different switch set-up than stock, etc etc.

to sum up:  YOU CAN'T DO IT.  STOP TRYING.

Boba, good reply...you should have just said to buy a second left side headlight housing and sat back for the dumbarse who tries to put the round peg in the square hole. "dude I need a sledge hammer"

Hey Guys, Why not swap with a UK or Japanese rider. As you guys ride on the wrong side of the road  ;D I'll bet the reflectors are the mirror image. Only trouble is, who's gonna have the two high beams and who'll have the two low beams.

It's all down to fashion. Dunno if you guys get the little Italian scooters over there but they've had these lights for years, just like the Ducatti under seat exhaust. It takes the Italians to come up with the styles and the Japanese to come up with the bikes that don't fall to bits.

Actually, the NSR750 by Honda was the first bike with undertail exhausts.  FYI

I have the cure for the damn headlight, that won't cost you a penny.  You will have to run the the bike with high beam at all time.  Here is the trick.  Turn on the light and switch it to high-beam.  Now pull the high-beam headlight (right headlight) out off it housing.  Tilt the high beam bulb to point up, do this until you get the same lumination with the low beam.  Once you have it, plug the rubber boot back in, but don't put the bulb back into its housing.  The rubber boot will hold it just fine.  I've been riding like this, and have taugh many peoples the trick.  So try it. 8)

First off the headlights don't need a fucking cure, because they work exactly how they're suppose to and what happens when you actually need the high beams?

wouldn't riding with the high beam on all the time put more drain on ur battery...causing our batteries to fail on us even more!?!?

Ain't a thing wrong with our batteries.  What's killing them is most likely short trips @ low rpm with the highbeam on.

It happened yesterday.  I was running my highbeam so he did not question me at first.  Till I started trying to help convince him that is was supposed to be like that.  Other bike was an R6.

Yeah, after about 10 minutes of sitting on the side of the road.

Reminds me of when a friend of mine got a talking to by a cop in regard to the seatbelt law.  His 'cuda only had a lap belt, which he wore while pulling up to a video store.  A cop was behind him as he pulled up.  When he got out of the car, she came up and told him he was getting a ticket because he wasn't wearing a seatbelt.  He them simply said "it has a lap belt only."  She got back in her car, sat there for like 5 minutes, and then just pulled away.  Whoopsie. :)
