Drove the SLK AMG.  Didn't like it.  The interior was too small for me and the amenities sucked compared to the BMW.  Not to mention no 7 speed double-clutch transmission with the MB.

Congrats Jeff!  :thumb:

I guess you could have gotten a Mercedes if you wanted to go fast in a straight line.  :P

I finally got the chance to drive one the other day although it was a naturally aspirated engine with a manual transmission it was still a blast to drive.

This begs the question... When is your first trackday?  8)

Nope..  Kicked around the thought of getting a goldwing or a ducati Hyper Motard, but just don't think I'd ride either as much as I would want to, and I KNOW that if I had the hyper-mo, I would lose my license in about 20 minutes.

I just picked up a KTM 690 SMC, should I stop by and we trade for a while? I'm curious to see if the dual clutch in the Z4 has launch control like the M3...  8)

Title: Re: My new Bike!

doesnt the classify it as a roadster?

I'm translating that to mean "Doesn't this classify it as a roadster?"

It all depends on who you are asking...  Per the wikipedia definition:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roadster

it does classify as a roadster.  BMW markets it as a roadster.  The so-called 'purists' don't want to call it a roadster because it gained 200lbs with the retractable hard-top over the soft-top and is "too plush".

Whatever.  It's got 4 tires, 2 seats and a steering wheel.  Call it what you will...

Bleh... no contest, you've got me...  BUT I think you'd find the new zed to be VERY well appointed and comfortable.

How do you like the Beltronics? I can pick that up locally, but like the 'bogey counting' capability and directional arrows on the V1.  Price is quite similar.

I have no experience with any kind of radar detector other than the one I got. After my little chat/donation with the local officials, I just needed something quick... I bought it the next day. The guy I work with has one and I just bought the same thing.

The Z4 is seriously a nice car though. congrats

Finally got a new N54 equipped E89 to PDI. Need to take out of transport mode and will test drive in the morning.

Jeff, one thing I noticed is that the power steering fluid level has been low on new E89's off the truck. Might want to double check yours.
Title: Re: My new Bike!
Post by: Jeff on August 21, 2009, 01:46:06 AM
Drive it with the Trans in Sport mode, it's a world of difference. And thanks for the tip, will check the PS fluid in the morn

Also, after 4 days at International, BMW customer relations isolated it to a freaking server in Munich that wasn't configured properly! Working now but sucks that it took 4 days to figure that out.

Let me know when you wanna come by. :-)

7 speed double clutch auto.  It's fucking amazing.  I've never seen an auto transmission that I liked until this.
Title: Re: My new Bike!
Post by: cosmo on August 21, 2009, 11:25:07 AM
drats... that's the only downer i can think of... i can't imagine driving well without a clutch. i drove 3 cars with auto tranny, and it's freakin boring. if i can't dose precisely the power going to the wheel, i feel like a passanger. has anyone else experienced this problem? how the hell do you get around it?

(on a side-note, even the new skiline has an auto tranny. one of the reasons i don't think i'd put my money down for one)

p.s. still no roofless pics :D
Title: Re: My new Bike!
Post by: Jeff on August 21, 2009, 11:33:16 AM
I was of the EXACT same mindset and wouldn't even CONSIDER an auto.  Then I drove the double-clutch auto..  I can treat it EXACTLY as a full manual without the clutch pedal. Every other response is identical, but faster.  Seriously, you should try one...

Here's what I wrote on it on my personal blog (kufalk.com)

DCT

The 7 speed automatic double-clutch gearbox was something new to me.  A bit of research broke it down to it simply being a transmission which has basically 2 separate gear mechanisms within the single transmission.  One for odd gears, one for even.  What this does is allow the Ďoddí gear (up and down) to basically be ďprimed & readyĒ for a shift, and it carries that shift out in milliseconds.  What this means is stomping on the gas and getting to the electronic limit of 150mph while barely feeling or noticing the gearshifts.  It means downshifts that donít throw you forward as well.

The transmission has 3 basic modes:
Auto-Drive: Full automatic transmission driving with ístandardí shift points.  Itís the gentlest of modes and the most fuel efficient.
Sport-Drive: Full automatic transmission with higher RPMs at the shift points and quicker shifts.  This is the mode I drive around in mostly.  Itís INSTANT power, all the time.
Manual: Full manual either through the paddles on the steering wheel or via the stick, which shifts in the logical manner of forward (downshift) and backward (upshift), unlike others that go side-to-side.

In all modes, you can use the paddles to shift, and after a short period the transmission will resume auto modes (except full manual).

As stated, Iíve never met an automatic transmission that Iíve actually liked until this one.  It is just something you need to experience to fully appreciate.

Title: Re: My new Bike!
Post by: cosmo on August 22, 2009, 04:31:43 PM
no, really... i work a lot with the clutch.. for me it's like gaspedal micromanagement :P getting the wheels over a sidewalk(with a wall in front of you), moving off when on ice/sand, stuff like that. you kinda need to learn that when you drive a rear-happy rx8 with worn out summer tires in winter... driving that is like the virginity.. one small prick.. all gone :P

Damn Jeff, it was a joke. The Z4 has electric power steering. Thought you would have caught on by now...  :embarrassed:   :run:

The black plastic cap is the oil filter, don't take that off.

electric "variable" assist.....

it's speed sensitive, almost like a dampner.. the lower the speed you are traveling, the less driver input is needed due to more assistance, and the faster you travel, the more input needed (actual effort put out by the driver). my hrr has it, it's nice, the faster you are going the tighter the steering gets.

If I'm not mistaken, my housemate's S2000 ap2 has electric power steering.  He was kind of freaked out when he was told too, haha.  I've never driven a car myself, but if it's anything like a steering damper for a bike, sounds like a good idea to me.

My only problem with stopping in this car is watching the rear-view to make sure I don't get ass-packed.  Trust me, it STOPS...  Without fade or compromise.  Dry/Wet/whatever, it just stops... Amazing.

I was only the 2nd person to take delivery of a Z4 there, so they didn't have any yet for the driving day.  So we spent the day in an M3.  I had not considered an M3 before as a car I would like.  It's now at the top of the short-list for when I need/want another car.  Thing was absolutely incredible.
Title: Re: My new Bike!
Post by: cosmo on August 31, 2009, 12:23:54 PM
that much of a difference?
Title: Re: My new Bike!
Post by: Jeff on August 31, 2009, 12:27:21 PM
Yes & no...  I mean, they're totally 2 different beasts.

The M3 is obviously not a roadster, so that's why I didn't get it in the first place.  And I didn't like the look of the convertible M3.  However, for a 'coupe', the M3 2 door with the carbon fiber top is awesome.  The main difference is in the motor.  The M3 has a V8 pushing  414hp with more torque than the Z4.  That's really it.  Just more snot when you mash the pedal.
