Title: Jason took a trip via hospital!
Post by: jeyrod on September 14, 2007, 11:44:56 PM
Jason748 took a trip to the hospital this afternoon during racer practice at BHF. It is unclear the extent of his injuries.

Some of the unconfirmed conditions report:
1. Jason seen driving a Volvo shortly after the incident. (highly unlikely)
2. Dead (hope not)
3. Taken via chopper due to combativeness, concussion...

Whatever the case keep Jason in your good thoughts.

Goofy bastid!  Stay on the bike!

Hope he's okay.  Not another collar bone either... ugh.

And as always, best wishes for the bike.  My old flame...

I don't know...from the options jeyrod listed, a broken collar bone would be the better of the choices...

I posted a thread on the CCS message board, but so far no news...someone there knew him enough to be able to call him, but he didn't answer.

Weekend traffic is pretty slow there too since most of them are out racing...

Here's some possible crash details from a member at the CCS site:

I'm not sure if this is related but,

there was a bad accident coming into turn 7 at BHF yesterday afternoon involving 5 bikes. There was a life-flight and a few ambulances.  I only know for sure that #68 Jeff Hoffmann was involved. Jeff was able to drive himself to the hospital with a dislocated shoulder. According to Jeff he was running practice laps with 2 other riders when they passed a slower rider coming into 6A. When they got to the "kink" before turn 7, that same slow rider came flying by the group breaking for turn 7. He clipped one of the bikes and sent himself, the 3 bikes in the group and another rider down.

Hope this helps.

Sure I skip a blackhawk weekend to be close to home due to the pending birth of my first child and he does something silly like this! It's all my fault........

Saw Jason himself today. He is walking around and talking to people. Definately not dead. Thank God. ;D

His accident was going in to 6. He said someone ran into him. Broke his other collarbone, concussion.

I believe the seperated shoulder was earlier in the day. The practice was horrible. I dont think I got 5 laps before a red flag. Insane - its practice.

Well here's the short version of what happened...

I don't actually remember the incident itself, so that part is just based on what I've heard.

Blackhawk farms raceway runs a "Racer practice" every Friday before the race weekend, so I've been running them all year.  On a side note, Practice was a LOT more dicey than usual, there were some guys out there making some really sketchy passes especially for a practice session and were very difficult to get by,  So More than once I'd let them get a ways ahead just so I was clear of them.  This weekend turned out to be one I shouldn't have run.
During the third session after lunch break, about half way through  I exited T5 like normal, about mid track, then pulled it back over to the left to get a good turn in for T6, I was happy to see that as it meant I'd have a fairly clear track for the next lap or so to string a good lap practice lap together together without traffic in front of me.  Then the next thing I know I wake up and see Tom- the track manager (not exactly what you want to wake up to...) and Karen - Head EMT from BHF over top of me talking to me, telling me I was going to take a helicopter ride, and I'd be OK...
Apparently I was hit pretty hard from behind, I can see from the marks on my bike is was my rear tire that was hit, and I went down really hard.  I still don't know exactly who hit me or why, but It was something I never expected to happen in practice, I try to be as respectful as possible ie if someone shows me a wheel I give them a little room and let them by as it's only practice.  I was knocked unconscious for somewhere between 3-5 minutes as was still out when the ambulance arrived, so they called for the life flight as they feared I might have sustained a head injury.  I was flown to the nearby Rockford Tramua center, and held over night for observation.  I was released about 2:00pm on Saturday and finally made it back to the track.

The Damage.
I have a small bruise on my brain between my eyes on my frontal lobe (a good solid concussion).
I broke my Right Collarbone - Not too bad.  hey, it matches my left now   ???
Bruised Ribs on my right side.
Some bruising on the inside of my right knee
And I'm pretty sore and stiff all over... Gee I wonder why   ::)

The Bike is in really good condition.. Needs a New Foot peg, Clip-on Bar, a little fiberglass work and a re-spray (but it needed that anyway).

Ohhh man!!! I'd be so pissed about the suit being cut off, but as a Emergency Room Trauma Nurse, I've cut off a lot of expensive shit in my 10 years (doesn't include the 8 yrs as an EMT).

Hey there Copper Top, if there's is anything I've learned from you, its that you may not like crashing but you are damn good at it. Ever consider being a stunt double? It would be less expensive and you may even make a few bucks. Nows your chance to get that Honda plate put on your collar bone. You said you wanted it on your next break. Hope you fell better Goof Troop.

Yea, I'll do a EXO-700 review  and some on how my gear held-up soon

Actually I'll be back to work tomorrow and see how it goes.  I had today off already so I was just a lazy bum today, but I started pulling my bike apart, well what ever I could with only one hand...

I'm not happy about the suit getting cut, but it was in my best interest at the time.  Besides I was going to retire that one after this weekend anyway as I had already talked to Rob about getting a different suit to try out  8)

I HATE chopper rides... This one was at least pretty smooth until it came time to land.  I really don't want to see the bill, but I need to get to it first or my wife will put me back in the hospital.

Absolutely  :thumb: as a racer and a motorcycle enthusiast this is one of the best ways to give back to the sport!  So please give, buy a sticker, some clothing, a patch, whatever just help them, help us out.

Hopefully I'll never need the RFF's service, but there are a lot of guys/gals and their families, just like me, out there do desperately need it.

Sounds pretty freakin crazy, but maybe it's better that you don't remember exactly what happened.  Good to see your gear did it's job, even though it all got cut off, bummer.  Must have been sharp scissors.

The surgery is not till tomorrow morning... but in the mean time I've managed to sleep wrong one night and knock my back out of wak... so after two emergency room visits I've finally got that under control.   let me tell you I'd rather brake many bones than have one major, non-stop back spasms....
Title: Re: Jason took a trip via hospital!
Post by: locdogg on September 25, 2007, 09:07:48 PM
Just to make you feel a lil better let tell you how my weekend went. I was sleeping at a friends Friday night and woke up cause my scalp was itchy. I scratched it like a mad man for a few minutes and fell back asleep. Woke up a few minutes later to what felt my head was being dowsed in gas and lit a blaze. Then my eyes started itching and burning. And then my throat seamed dry and itchy. I got up to blow my nose which was running. All the while confused as fuck and half asleep. I walked in to their bathroom and looked in the mirror and realized my eyes were nearly swollen shut.

I then decided it was something more than simply the fans in the room drying me out. Its hard to rationalize at 5 am after a night of drinking. So, I woke my friends Nichole and Justine and said "Hey, I think theres something wrong." Nichole takes one look and says "Yeah I think you've been bit by something." We only have a few critters that dare venture into a house here, black widows and scorpions. Neither of which are fun to have been bitten by. So Nichole calls poison control to ask what to do and what may have bitten me. And as the lady is describing the symptoms of a scorpion sting, I am developing the same symptoms. She then informs us the it is very rare to be having an allergic reaction to a scorpion sting (1-2/100 lucky me). She then asks if I am having trouble breathing and says if so than we need to call 911 or rush to the nearest hospital.

I took one Benidril and flew out the door. Needless to say I looked like a fuckin Chinaman and felt like death. Come to find out I was stung once on the top of my head, once on my right shoulder and 2-3 times on my back. Yes it was a somewhat speedy recovery (2-4 days), but never the less sucked pretty fuck'n bad. And if I get stung again in the near future I may go into Anaphylactic shock and maybe even die. Lucky me to be one of the few people to be allergic to scorpions. Talk about a fun Sat morning! Weeeeeeee.

crashing sucks. hospitals are worse, and surgery is like a hole in the head. on top of it all, is that bill you get for the whirlybird escort to the hospital. i hope your insurance covers it- i've heard that it costs as much as 10K!!!  :-X

get better soon!

 :)

How do you guys do it in the states to risk your health and life. You break a couple of bones in a crash and it must cost you a fortune in hospital bills. I know that if i go to the track and crash i  know my transport will cost me nothing and my stayat the hospital won't cost a penny

The wonderful world of credit. If you aren't in debt you can't get it.

Update...
Well, I'm starting to feel more normal.  Still have a few aches and pains, and I'll be in this damn sling for another 3 weeks, but everything is pointing towards a full recovery to 100% (or more with that bionic thing going on  8) )!

That and REALLY good medical insurance!

Just got the bill for the chopper ride....  ::)

A little over $8,200 for a less than 10 minute ride.  Now I just have to wait and see what insurance is going to take care of.

That is one Hell of a price tag for 10 minutes...the bummer is, at that point Jason had no choice due to being unconscious and the confusion he had on scene...there's no possibility of him signing off against medical advice...medically he had no choice!

Read your policy and see what it covers. Even if most is covered I have a feeling that the deductible will sting. The main thing however, is that in the end you're in one piece  :thumb:

Yea, I had to write an appeal letter stating that I had no say (DUH... I was unconscious) when they called for the life-flight because is was a possible 'life threatening" situation.  They made it sound like they would cover it with the appeal letter, except for the deductable of course, without a fight.

But yea, the deductable is eating a HUGE chuck out of my race fund...

Does CCS have insurance to cover any rider injuries and/or property damage? I know this would be ridiculously expensive but last time racing at Beaverun w / WERA (July 8th I think) there was a fellow who crashed and was injured (nothing severe) and there were WERA officials over at his camp area talking pics of his injuries and I think bike damage as well, and then another racer had told me that they had insurance to cover all participants (not sure to which extent). This sounded like b.s. to me because I can not even imagine the premium on such a policy, but who knows  ??? Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Not that' I've ever heard of, with CCS, WERA, CRA, LRRS, WSMC, etc...

I think some track organizations will cover the cost of the trip to the hospital but thats about the most I have ever heard of. It would be terrific if racing organizations could insure participants, but man think what track fees would be then!

The last update... hopefully

Found out about 4 weeks ago at the first follow up appt after surgery that I had 3 broken ribs on my right side.  That explained why they hurt so damn bad!

Got to get rid of the sling today 8) finally...  but I'm restricted to a max of lifting 10 lbs with my right arm.

Insurance is coming out pretty good, better than I expected!

Overall my right side is still sore, and my right arm is definitely weak.  So I'm looking to be in pretty good condition.

Finally I just want to say a huge THANK YOU to all of you, your support means a lot, I couldn't believe that there were a couple threads started before I was even released from the hospital!

Almost,  Ribs are healed - Finally.  My Shoulder is at about 80%, but the last week it's been really sore.  Don't know if it the cold or what and probably doesn't help I've had to snowblow everyday this week except Thursday - and we're suppose to get another 3" today!
But I've got what should be my last appointment - hopefully - with my Orthopedic surgeon next week!
