Title: is this normal?
Post by: 04cbr600rr on September 20, 2006, 12:13:50 AM
Quick question.. When I'm driving on the highway at about 75 MPH in 6th gear, the RPM's are around 7k. is this normal or is this higher than what it should be? I'm not sure if the bike has stock gearing or not... I bought it used from a dealership

Yes that is perfectly normal! Unless you are riding a Harley!?

Will a Harley do 75mph?  ???  I guess if it was dropped off a cliff it might.  :P

Count the teeth on the sprockets.

Front should be 16, rear should be 43.

If it's other than that, the gearing has been changed...

Isn't the number stamped on the sprocket? Counting the teeth sounds tedious  ???

SHHH!  I figured he'd get to about 38 or so when he saw the # stamped on it...

I've still got the stock gearing on my bike and that sounds about right

RPM/MPH for mine is about 10 off, so if I'm at 6500 RPMs I'm at 75 MPH in 6th gear.

geez at the track I normally race at I don't even hit sixth gear.  I should put it in sometime to make sure it's still there  :thumb:

Road America  is the only place that 6th gear gets to come out and play on my bike...

When my ride was still stock it didn't even come into its own until around 6 or 7000 RPM, and it didn't really produce until 9 or 10000. I suppose you could do 75 in 6th at that RPM, but why? I know the exhaust gets a bit loud in the 10000 range, but...its supposed too! Drop a gear or two, enjoy the noise, and ride it like it's a sportbike (they like it rough! :spank:)!

Stock gearing on my '03 RR was 6.5k at 75mph.  So if you are running 7k at 75mph, I'd think your gearing is off just a bit.
