up shift techniques/a la racing style, not street
« on: October 01, 2003, 11:59:48 AM »
i want to get other opinions and techniques that i can try for shifting.  So far I've tried the no clutch shift, but it's not something i got used to that easily.  I prefer no clutch downshift on decreasers.  I've also tried the throttle pinned, clutch and shift @13k.  And of course the sqeeze and ease, roll on the throttle.

I was just wondering what different upshifting techniques we can try to find our chi.

thanks to all who contribute.

Personally I do clutchless upshifts, and always clutch on the downshifts. Its just easier for me to modulate the rear wheel slide, if I have to, if I use the clutch on the downshift.

ditto...

Not to mention, a clutchless downshift is [1] much harder on the transmission than an upshift, and [2] has a much greater chance for you sliding out the rear end uncontrollably.

clutchless upshifts save time and do no harm.
clutchless downshifts do not save any time and have considerable risk.

Pull in the clutch, blip/shift/dump all in one move and you can downshift in a fraction of a second...

ammendment...

clutchless downshift only when necessary.  usually i would hit the brake point, brake, pull in, bang down 2 or 3, then blib and release for normal off the straights downshifting.  I had tried the downshift through every gear, but that was a waste of time and energy.

Now I just do the above.

As for the decreaser, the only one i've needed to use that on was before the right horseshoe at fontana.  The gear change is during braking, so the bike is picked up a little anyway, so rather than change position unnecessarily on the left hand, just blipandbang down one for the turn.

On upshifts: I preload the shifter just before shifting and when ready to shift, drop from full to 3/4 back to full throttle very rapidly and it smoothly and quickly falls into the next gear.

by preload I mean apply upward pressure on the shifter as if you were trying to shift.(downward pressure for GP style of course)

I have never tried clutchless downshifting but for clutchless upshifting I also preload the shifter and while at full throttle I only come off a hair while upshifting and then going back to full throttle. I have also done this from 1st to 2nd but it is a little hairy due to shifting thru neutral.

Upshifting while not using the clutch really does no harm?  (I'm new to bikes, and yes, this is my first bike)

That is correct. Read it again if you didn't understand it the first time and please don't tell me you think you can smoke V8's with your Integra?  ::)

You need to blip the throttle to upshift without the clutch. It takes practice to do it right, especially at lower RPM's, but you only need to push up as hard as usual.

Just dont do my mistake of leaning into a left sweeper in third at about 13grand and accidently put pressure on the shifter and go to 2nd. Scared the shit out of myself luckily it was on the exit of the turn so I was almost straight up and down again. Not sure how I even did it I do not remember even feeling my foot hit the shifter but well thats life accidents happen. (yeah I know I will get crap for posting this but hey no one is perfect we have all mis shifted before)

I'm not new to bikes, but new to clutchless shifting.  I tried it a few times also but the lever wouldn't go.  What does blipping the throttle do to make you able to shift?  Wouldn't that be jerky to blip the throttle in gear?
I mean normally when you do a blip, you aren't engaged and you're just trying to get the engine speed up to mesh the gears smoother.

All blipping does is get the RPM to match the speed for that gear. When you blip for upshifting you  are taking the RPM's down a little for the upshift, to match the RPM's of the new gear. Try it sometime it's great for shifting when you are "banging" through the gears, kinda awkward during regular riding.
