Stupid, Stupid, Stupid . . . damn diesel gas

Alright, so last night to add to an already horrible day I pulled the bonehead of the year award.  I went to fill up at a gas station before a ride with some friends.  There were three gas hoses, 87, 93 and one unmarked.  Almost every gas station in my area has 87, 89 & 93 so without even thinking I assume the other unlabeled pump is 89.  Well I was wrong.   About a mile downt he road I got a slight hesitation in the throttle so I pulled over and realized what happened.  About 2 hours later after taking the bike apart in the parking lot and pouring out my gas tank I was able to get it restarted.  She seems to be running fine now but my quesition is what should I check and or replace to make sure I minimize the long term effects (e.g. check to see if my spark plugs are messed).

If it's running fine now you should be fine.  You might want to see what a fuel filter would cost (if there even is one), and if it's cheap, replace that just to be safe.  I don't think this is necessary though.

It won't hurt it too bad...  It could foul the plugs and possibly clog the injectors, but in the warm months, you shouldn't have a problem with it.  Just run some gas through it and you'll be fine.

If it continues to run like crap, look at having the injectors cleaned and replacing the plugs.  No, don't use any additives or sprays.  If the injectors need to be cleaned, bite the $200 bullet at a dealer and have them cleaned right...

Look at it this way.  Better diesel in a gas motor than gas in a diesel!

Thanks Jeff, I usually don't take too much in those snake oil injector cleaners and what not.  I haven't tried to start it today but I will at lunch, but last night when I got it running again, it was running perfect not even smoking anymore.  I think I'll plan on replacing the plugs in case I fouled them.  Is there a fuel filter, I don't have my service manual at work.

Frankie,  there was absolutely nothing different with the nozzeles.  Hardly any stations around here carry diesel and the ones that do, usually have compeltely seperate pumps and are bright yellow.  This was a small moms and pops station with an unlabeled pump.

Well, I'm glad I could entertain most of you, I know i'll never live this one down.

They should be but since the opening on the bike really isn't a standard gas size opening it wouldn't matter.

But typically you can tell by looking at the pump dispenser for the right size. In this case bigger is not better.....

Oh and some of the diesel/kerosene dispensers have green on the handle where gas has black or some other color.  At least here in Ohio it's that way.

Some pumps have the bigger nozzle, but cars need to fill up too. Some gas stations will have one small nozzle and one large.

how did you know it was diesel?  Could it have just been water/gas since it was a small mom/pop?

Its easy to tell the difference between gas and diesel.

yeah, but the question is after he pumped, drove down the road, stopped, how did he know then it was diesel.

Oh trust me, you can tell by the smell of the exhaust that the wrong gas is in there.  Did that in my quad, grab the wrong gas can out of the garage to filler up.

There's a fuel filter internal to the fuel pump (inside the tank).  Don't worry about it unless you're having a problem.  

FWIW, diesel pumps aren't necessarily a pre-determined color in any given state.  In WI, they vary, Yellow, Black, Green.   Size will also differ depending on where the pump is.  If it's a truck pump, it will be a stand-alone pump and the nozzle size will be huge.  If it's a car pump, the nozzle size will be the same.

Where you WILL be able to notice is that typically the diesel pump handle is VERY greasy looking and feeling.  Diesel doesn't evaporate like gas does, so it gets messy...
