Your thoughts on the 96CBR600
« on: December 28, 2011, 01:56:52 PM »
I have a guy around my town that is selling a 96 model CBR600 that looks great with 26k on it. He wants 1500.cash was his base price nada val was between 1k- and all original val was 1,700. He said the bike would need a rear brake cable, and a new chain, just guessing but im thinking with the millage where it is this could be the original chain. Well anyway i have been riding for along time, but have never owned a CBR only ninja's and was thinking of getting this one if it was a good deal or the smart thing to do. I would be riding it alot on trips from work and back and was wondering if your up on your hands like the ninja's and the over all handling of this bike on wet roads and what not, where you are in the sitting style i know its a bit different but not sure of this model. The millage to work is fourty miles one way. mpg that i found was around 35-40mpg for this bike? WELL I WILL LEAVE IT TO YOU GUYS AS IM SURE THIS IS YOUR BREED OF BIKE. new here so thanks for the info. ???

lol sorry man the only cbr i own is a 2007 RR and my little knowledge of the cbr only goes back to 2003. all i know is that your 96 model for 1500 bucks is a bit high.. id give him 1100 at most. you could probably start finding 2000 dollar RR's soon from 2003
this is my signature.....there are many like it....but this one is mine.....

You have all sorts of questions about how it was stored for this amount of time. Things could be gummed up pretty good from fuel and oil decomposing. I doubt that he removed all the fluids before storing it for that long. Not even fuel stabilizer will last that long, if he used any. Which means your gas tank is corroded, and your entire fuel system gummed up.
It was a good bike in 96 but your money is better spent elsewhere, or using the 1500 as a down payment. The quality of the newer bikes (2003-present) is FAR superior to a 96 model and you can pick up 03's and 04's CHEAP. Do some digging.
This is my opinion, take it or leave it :)

Riding position and comfort all depends on your body build and personal preference. I'm 5'8" riding a 2011 CBR600RR and I feel quite comfortable on it. Not the most comfortable for long hauls but then again, I have had multiple back injuries so that is probably one of the factors to why its not super comfy for me. I did own a 2008 CBR600RR before my most recent significant back injury and when I had the 2008, I had no issues with comfort at all.

Again, each bike will be different for each individual. You may want to sit on it in person, even test ride it, before making your purchase. During your test drive, you may notice things that you probably wouldn't just from looking at it (rides straight or pulls to one side, etc..)

Also, the price is way too high. A bike that is about 13 years old does not retain 89% of its value. Unless of course we're talking RC30's, but we're not.  :thumb:

96' would be a CBR600F3...  IMHO, for a street bike, the F3/F4/F4i series are some of the most comfortable "sportbikes" there are.   They are super easy to ride, lots of used parts around, holds up very well, handles well, etc...  "IF" I were to to buy a I-4 sport bike for daily commuting on the street, I'd Look for a nice F4i (2001 - 2006) because (again, in my opinion) it's a MUCH better "commuting" bike than the 600RR is...)
I'd check out http://cbrforum.com/forum/ - Lots of "F" series bikes/owners over there.

If it's in great condition, well maintained, very clean, with all service records, then $1500 would be a good deal...
But it doesn't sound like from your description...

He said the bike would need a rear brake cable, and a new chain, just guessing but im thinking with the millage where it is this could be the original chain.

Never seen a modern sport bike with a rear brake "cable"...  and if it needs a chain, it also need sprockets too...  so you're probably looking at around $300 +/- in parts (+ labor unless you do it yourself) for a chain/sprocket set & rear break line.  So take that right off the top, also like CDN started to hit on - Has it been in storage for an extended period of time, or has it been ridden (not "started" - but actually ridden) regularly?  also how do the "consumable" parts look i.e. tires, brake pads, oil color (Is it clean or dirty), brake fluid color (again clean or dark color), battery date/condition, etc...

Honestly, without looking at it it's very hard to say, but based on your description and assuming a it's in "typical" condition (needs more than what he's telling you), I'd say fair price would be between $1000 - $1200...
I'd recommend looking for a 2001 - 2006 CBR600F4i - it's the best of the "F" series  and really the little bit more you'd pay for it, will most likely be cheaper overall.

I would have to agree with what Jason said here 100%. As I've noticed on private sale used bikes, your generally looking at a min of several hundred dollars worth of repairs that the owner didn't care to tell you about, or from just pure neglect. I have personally always like the f4i's, good looking bike, and pretty friggen comfortable.

I think it's different for certain people. I say this because I'm completely comfortable on my bike for hours. I could do at least 4 without a break. So for me I could ride superbike or supersport and not have to worry about comfort. Mind you I'm 5'9", so pretty much made to fit these bikes.
