Sprocket/chain
« on: November 22, 2011, 12:33:47 AM »
Hey,
I am currently stationed in Japan, and wanted some advice on sprockets/chain.  I have a 2006 and want to change the chain and sprockets.  I do not go to the track, (I want to start going, but never seem to have time) and usually just comute back and forth to work, and try to get to the mountains as much as I can.  I guess my question is, should I gear down and which sprocket/chain do you recommend?  I don't want the cheapest, nor do I need the best.  Thanks for all your help!

driven makes a good kit. maybe for you keep the stock gearing and just do the 520 conversion? its on you buddy, if geared down in front more acceleration less gas milage and goofy speedo reading... blah blah blah i think they have 100000 threads on this but imo stay with stock gearing for the street and just go with the 520

Ahh, forgot about the speedo change.  Yeah, I will probably keep stock gears.  I did search, but I guess I didn't find a direct answer.  What does the 520 conversion do?  Also, what is the stock front and rear?

520 is just a skinner chain...and sprocket setup. so less centrifugal mass.  i believe stock gearing is 16 front 42 rear.. for an 07   this is an un educated statement about the 520 so hopefully somebody can come in here and validate or give a better answer

a 520 conversion gives you a little less weight for the bike to push around and less rotating mass for the bike to stop. but its not so much of an advantage by itself that you'll love it right off. but multiplied by other mods and its worth it. there is a mugen store in tokyo. in the american motorcycling world mugen isnt well known, but in japan it is. most of us know of mugen as a manufacturor of honda car performance parts but they do bikes too.   also if you contact rob oliva @ lithium motorsports he should be able to give you a good price on a 520 kit. he sold me mine for a great price. are you a marine by chance? or a soldier?

How the hell have you been man? It has been a while since I've seen you around here. Did you take your bike with you, or just break down and buy one over there? I had +1/-1 (remembering correctly, i didn't do anything drastic)  on my 03, and it was just a little peppier than stock, and I enjoyed it. Speedo was a bit off, but nothing I worried about as I always rode +10 (or more) the speed limit, so it put me that much closer to legal.

Thanks. I will talk with Rob. I've been doing good out here. I brought my bike over here. It cost almost $2400 to get it inspected and registered in Japan, but it is cool knowing I have the only orange tribal in Japan. It get a lot of looks. I should be back in OKC in a couple years. Riding is pretty good here.  Especially around Mt. Fuji.  As always, thanks for the help guys.

The set up I am looking at ordering gives me the choice of 15/43 or 15/45 for gearing.  Since my bike's stock gearing is 16/43, which will get me closer to stock?  All this mechanical nonsense goes over my head,  I am an electrician by trade.   Also, should I go with a steel rear sprocket or aluminum?  Thanks for all the help as always.

15/43 will be closest to stock. 15/45 is going to pull very hard and more than likly wheelie like a madman. i used a -1/+2 setup at my last race and i wheelied all over the place on the start but the bike pulled so damn hard out of the corners it was rediculous.  i would use an aluminum sprocket with 15/43 if i was you.
