It's hard to imagine how much the pro race teams spend.  I called Erion the other day to see if I could buy some bodywork off them and they said the bodywork that Erion uses costs like 6 g's and the Factory Honda stuff about 9 g's.  Anyways they said they'd sell the Erion stuff for $1800 USD.

You're talking out your ass...

a campaign at the top would take a few years unless you can buy the talent capable of winning (which would cost you upwards of 7 figures). 

Hiring a team, building a paddock and Transporting all of it will be in the mid 6 figures (assuming leased equipment).

Bikes?  Unless you have support of the factories you're screwed and you can again plan on mid 6 figures if not upper 6 figures.

So now that you're $2.5M into this, what money are you making???

Yes, as mentioned, you can run significantly cheaper than that, but to win, you cannot...

Jeff's right the US factory teams spend millions.  Now let's start talking.  We can get Steve Crevier to run in the Parts Canada tour on a 600 with that kind of money.  He's one of the best, former ama 600 champ.  He is suppose to be riding for Yamaha this year but he won the 600 on a Honda in '05 so we can do some talking

Roadracingworld just posted an article on their site about oxygenated fuels in the LRRS. It has a little bit of interesting info, Pro quality gas is $500/gal. Thats just the fuel, let alone all the supercool bits. Though Ben Thompson did infact lead one lap at MidOhio on close to stock bike. I know its been modified but not to the extent of the factory teams or even some of the second tier teams. Just a look into how much it costs to run up front.

But hey I'm down for a run at the factories.

If you think it's in purse money, you're unimaginably off base.  Corporate and product endorsements are where the money is, and if you think you can walk in and get some, you're sadly mistaken.

Give me a budget of a few $M (like 3-5) and a few years and I could probably hire the right talent to make a run at getting MONEY, but a win is still fairly distant.

Take a look at this for example...  Michael Jordan (yes, THAT Michael Jordan) decided to get into motorcycle racing as in funding a team.  that was like 5 years ago.  His money is unlimited, yet I don't believe his team has even landed a podium yet, let alone a championship.

Finally in 07, he is to the point of buying big talent (he bought big talent before, but not big enough).  Now he might have a chance. 

Is he making money or losing money at this?  That is the question...

My guess?  He's breaking even or losing just a slight bit.  His product ties are incredibly deep and can generate tremendous amounts of money.  Likely all of which is used to fund a pair of racers and the crew to support it...
