Rattle / buzz update... As some may remember, my new 05 suffered from the infamous 5K Buzz as well, and I'm happy to say that it has gone away... I've got 2400 miles on the new bike and I have not noticed it for some time...

I'm just wondering if I don't notice it because now I'm generally riding at 7 - 9K RPMs, meaning that I'm usually exellerating past the 5K range pertty quickly...

You can also use a piece of foam under the tank instead of dynomat.

I had the exact same problem, it was so bad my g/f on the back was getting pissed of with it.  I took the tank cover off last night and installed the Dynomat on the upper part of the tank and its smooth sailing now, all I can hear is the sweet sound of the engine  8)

And here I was just going to 6k RPM to get rid of the noise.

Good find, now I'll have to figure out how to get to the ECU's.

I haven't got to ride my 06 yet, but do you think that it will have the same problem. I will go ahead and fix it now before I think somthing is wrong with it for the first ride. ???

I noticed the same thing the first time I got on my '05. Thanks for the tips about fixing it. Do I have to take the side farings of to get the tank cover off?

Yes, there are bolts near the front of the cover that have to be removed

I had the seats, tail fairing, side covers, lower & mid fairings and the ram air covers off but I was installing a full exhaust & a PC3 at the time.
You might be able to get away with removing the seat, side covers, & ram air covers if you are VERY careful...no guarantees tho !
Don't risk damaging your plastic if anything gets in a bind !

I ended up using some small pieces (3/4") of foam weather strip at the spots that were marked in the 1st picture and 3-4" where it says " HONDA >PP-MD30< "

The buzz is now gone....yippie !!

Update:
I got the cover off by only removing the seat, side farings, and ram air covers. THe Dynomat really did the trick. no more vibration.

Behind the right side faring, there was this little compartment that needed a key to open (or turn the latch at least). Does anyone know what this is for? seems pretty inconvenient to keep any tools that you may need road side.

BoulderCBR - Yes, the small black box behind the right panel is a storage comparment.  I'm planning to use mine for a tire plug kit. Even though plugs do not work for large punctures, mainly because the top layer of motorcycle tires are thin, they will usually work to get you home, you might even have to put two plugs.  Anyway, this is off topic and talked about in other places.

As for the 5K rattle/buzz on my 05, I'm starting to hear mine again.  Now that the source has been identified, I think I will add some foam under the tank cover as well.

Took mine apart and fixed it using tips from this thread. No more buzz!

I finally found a use for the minimal '06 tool kit. I cut a strip out of the foam that was provided in the tool kit and taped it over the buzz spots. What's that foam piece for anyway?

The rubbing was EXACTLY where the marks are on CNI Dawg's pics. Thanks guys!

You should sell that kit on e-bay.  I have no doubt that someone would pay $15-$20 bucks to stop the buzz.  :P :P :P

Yeah, ha, I might be the first to buy it off you too.  I got the same damn rattle on my '06.  Ha.  It goes away if I press on the tank cover, but you're all right, at 5k, it goes off like an alarm.  I'm taking the bike it for it's 600 mile dealer service on  tuesday, and I'm gonna mention it to them, and see if they have had other people telling them about it.
